The CAFL Racial Justice Task Force (RJTF) cordially invites you to this year’s Fall Meeting with Roxanna Asgarian, author of We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America. The book investigates the case of a white couple, who drove off a cliff and committed murder-suicide with their six adopted Black children. And through years of research and interviews, journalist Roxanna Asgarian shines a light on a child welfare system that refused to see the abuse suffered by these children prior to their murder.
The book has been called, “A harrowing account…[and] a powerful critique of [the] foster care system…We Were Once a Family is a wrenching book” by The New York Times, and “A riveting indictment of the child welfare system…[A] bracing gut punch of a book” by The Washington Post.
